Monroe-New Glarus dominates Platteville

PLATTEVILLE - The Monroe-New Glarus girls swim team turned in a dominating performance in its season opener, capturing a 110-55 win over Platteville-Lancaster on Thursday.

The Cheesemakers won 11 of 13 events. Monroe-New Glarus freshman Anna Newcomer and Mekenzie Hammer each had a hand in winning four events. Senior Maddie Hammer had a part in winning three races.

"They came into the meet with energy and excitement to get their season underway," Monroe-New Glarus coach Linda Moser said of the team.

Maddie Hammer won the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2 minutes, 2.31 seconds and won the 100 breaststroke (1:16.10). Maddie's sister, Mekenzie, won the 50 freestyle (26.39) and 100 backstroke (59.78).

Newcomer won the 200 individual medley in 2:39.44 and won the 500 freestyle (6:19.49).

The Cheesemakers' 200 medley relay team of senior Grace Keith, Mekenzie Hammer, Anna Newcomer and Cammi Ganshert won the race in 2:02.95.

Moser said the winning 200 medley relay team set the tone for the dual meet.

The Cheesemakers' 200 medley relay team of Linnea Tabaka, Kendra Wenger, Emily Meritt and Megan Benzschawel took second (2:15.93).

The Cheesemakers' 200 freestyle relay team of Meritt, Kayleigh Nesbitt, Benzschawel and Ganshert won (1:55.64). Newcomer teamed with Keith, Mekenzie Hammer and Maddie Hammer to win the 400 freestyle relay (4:03.35).

Keith posted second-place finishes in the 200 freestyle (2:23.78) and 100 butterfly (1:09.27). Ganshert placed second in the 200 IM (2:45.41), and Benzschawel finished second in the 100 freestyle (1:02.29).

Monroe-New Glarus will open up the Badger South Conference season at 6 p.m. Tuesday when its hosts Monona Grove at the Green County Family YMCA.
