LAKE GENEVA - The Cheesemakers advanced to the WIAA Division 2 golf sectionals Tuesday after carding a fourth-place 325 at the Grand Geneva Highland course in the Big Foot Regional.
Senior Brandon Wilson led Monroe with a 7-over-par 78. Mitch McArdle shot an 80, Kyle Bruce had an 82 and Aaron Krattiger carded an 85. Because only the top four scores are counted, Garrett Voegeli's 92 was unneeded.
"We played great," Monroe coach Jeriamy Jackson said. "We played a practice round here on Thursday (May 21), so we kind of knew what to expect."
Edgewood won the meet with a 294. McFarland shot a 318 and Edgerton carded a 319. The top four teams in the regional advance to sectionals. Big Foot was the first team left out after registering a 337 in the 10-team bracket.
"Edgewood blew everyone out of the water. And Edgerton came out of nowhere. Their previous 18-hole best was a 359. I don't know how they dropped 40 shots, but they did," Jackson said.
Edgerton's Dan Ozga shot a day-best 70.
Brodhead's Jake Cole shot a 76 and will advance to sectionals, and Kurtis Johnson carded a 92. As a team, Brodhead finished with a score of 398.
Monroe next plays Monday, June 1, at Yahara Hills golf course in Madison. The top two teams advance to the state meet, and the top three individuals not on a state-bound team also qualify.
Mineral Point Regional
Darlington missed the cut to sectionals by four strokes, carding a 345 at the Dodge-Point County Club Tuesday.
Brent Tuescher shot a 77, qualifying for sectionals. Bryan Riechling carded an 84 and Cody Murray had a 90.
Mineral Point won the meet with a 319. Fennimore (325), Cuba City (329) and Iowa-Grant (341) also advanced to team sectionals.
Prairie School Regional
New Glarus punched a ticket Tuesday to sectionals with a second-place 347 at the Johnson Park golf course in Racine. Alex Johnson and Mason Lockard each carded an 85 and Jake Bast shot an 86 for the Knights.
Argyle-Pecatonica shot a 421 and missed the cut by 80 strokes. Kyle Kent led the team with a 102.
Kenosha St. Joseph won the meet with a 331. Barneveld (363) and Racine Lutheran (364) will also advance to sectionals.
