MONROE - Senior Sydney Mathiason had a monster match, piling up 21 kills, three blocks, three aces and six digs to help the Cheesemakers knock off Parkview in four sets Tuesday.

The Cheesemakers edged the Vikings, 25-11, 26-28, 25-22, 25-18. It marks the second straight win for Monroe (7-11, 1-4 Badger South).

"The first set we came out with intensity and just finished the game," Monroe coach Heidi Witt said. "They had fun. The second set, we had some communication breakdowns, which, quite simply, leads to ball-handling errors. We powered back in the last two sets to seal the win. Sydney really took advantage of not having a real solid block in front of her and powered the ball down or placed a tip in an open area. She is a smart player and can see the open court and just puts the ball there."

Monroe sophomore Cassi Gersbach and freshman Zoee Pond each had six kills, and Gersbach added two blocks. Senior Alexis Allen had a team-high 23 assists and senior Alysha Witt dished out 13 assists. Junior Hailey Betthauser notched four digs and senior Payton Sigafus had a team-best five aces and added five kills.

"She (Sigafus) really had some power behind her serve and put it in some tough spots on the other side," Witt said. "When she gets her full approach and snaps that wrist she has quite the hit."

Witt was impressed by the passing from the Cheesemakers, adding that she noticed a big improvement.

"We saw some really great passing out of Meredith Hose tonight - the stats you don't see, but those are the passes that allow our setters to give our hitters the opportunity to terminate the ball," Witt said.

Monroe hosts Watertown in a Badger South Conference match at 7 p.m. Thursday. It's Youth Night, and the Cheesemakers recognize players from the Monroe Parks and Recreation volleyball program that meets on Mondays. Seventh- and eighth-grade volleyball players will also be recognized.
