Monroe Mat Rats crown two state champions

MONROE - This past weekend, Monroe Mat Rats had 11 wrestlers participate in a WWF Kids Folkstyle State Tournament at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. The club had two state champions come out of the tournament. And two wrestlers also traveled to another youth tournament in Whitewater on Saturday.

Traiten Gorr, in the 1998-99 birth year bracket, and Reeve Lincoln (1996-97 bracket) were Monroe's champions.

Gorr won the the title with a 1-0 decision in the final match, after beating Weston's Carson McCauley, Berlin's Mitchell Kramer (2-1) and Aaron Mutter (6-1).

Lincoln pinned Holmen Viking's Hunter Hauser in the championship match of his bracket. That followed pin fall wins over Riverdale's Benjamin Bloedow and Sheboygan Falls' Jon Lope.

Sam Kind in the 200-2001 birth year won by decision over Fennimore's Cameron Allen, 1-0. Kind was pinned in his next match by Dylan Sprague of Wittenberg-Birnamwood. Kind had his state tournament end after losing to Hustiford's Cody Clauser, 2-0.

In the 2000-2001 birth year, Drake Ingold at 69 pounds lost his first match over Weston Wichman of Johnson Creek by a 6-4 score. Ingold won his next match by decision over Bergh Diebel of Wisconsin Rapids, 9-8. In his final match of the tournament, Ingold lost 8-0 to Crandon's Ty Flannery.

Nick Schumacher in the 2000-2001 birth year won his first match by pin fall over Lancaster's Gavin Parr. In his second match of the day, Schumacher lost 9-2 to Pittsville's Riley Wayerski. Schumacher won again in his third match, by pin fall over Klay Ellenbecker of Athens. His final match ended in a tough 1-0 loss of 1-0 to Jacob Blemke of Luxemburg-Cassville.

In the 1998-1999 birth year, McKenzy Foley won his first match of the tournament, 4-2, over Cambridge's Josh Rusch. He lost his second match, 9-2, to Jake Kreklaw of Medford, then lost his finale, 9-0, to Hortonville's Nathan Lichtfuss.

In the 1996-1997 birth year, Tyler Davis won his first match, 5-0, over Payton Calvert of Dodgeville, then lost by pin fall to Merrill's Tyler Schmidt. Davis lost his third match, 5-0, to Gavin Kluck.

Troy Gorr, in the 1996-1997 birth year, lost by major decision to Tyler Wanek, Riverdale 11-0, then fell to Merrill's Riley Kurtz 4-2.

Aaron Hesgard, in the 1994-1995 birth year, lost his first match, 4-2, to Justin Tyne of Nekoosa. He then won by major decision, 9-0, over Austin Wiese of X-Factor Elite before losing 14-2 to Ian Hughes of Ozaukee.

In the 1994-1995 birth year, Kevin Klopfenstein lost his first match, 5-3, to Mauston's Colin Dolata. Klopfenstein defeated Merrill's David Pophal, 9-2, then lost 7-2 to Dodgeville's Jasper Meeker.

Trevor Gorr fell just short of a championship, losing the title match in the 1994-95 birth year bracket to Wittenberg-Birnamwood's Cody Kasprak, 4-2. Gorr registered wins over Clayton Jennings of Weston (2-0), Nathan Stelzner of Weyauwega Fremont (1-0) and Mishicot's Jonathan Brendemuehl (1-0).

At Whitewater, Mitchell Quinn took second place in the kindergarten- second-grade division. In the fifth- sixth-grade division, Jacob Quinn finished second.

This weekend, some Mat Rats will be ending their wrestling season, as they travel to the National Folkstyle Youth Wrestling tournament in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on April 3-5.
