MADISON - Monroe's Dustin Leutenegger finished 13th out of 3,000 competitors in Ironman Wisconsin Sunday.

Leutenegger, a 2000 Monroe High School graduate, finished the Ironman Wisconsin in 9 hours, 43 minutes, 21 seconds. He placed third in the men's 35-39 age group. With his performance, Leutenegger qualified for the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii in 2017.

The Ironman is a series of long-distance triathlon races. In a full Ironman, participants swim 2.4 miles, and then ride a bike 112 miles and finish with a marathon run of 26.2 miles.

Leutenegger completed the swim in 1 hour, 15 minutes, 44 seconds, the bike ride in 5:05.18 and the run in 3:15.22. (Transition times are not included.)

In July as he was preparing for Ironman Wisconsin, Leutenegger said his goal was 9 hours, 45 minutes.

"I would like to finish top three," Leutenegger said of his goal for Ironman Wisconsin. "I want to qualify to go to Hawaii in 2017. That fuels the drive."

He made a big jump compared to his first Ironman he competed in during 2015. That year, Leutenegger finished 54th out of 2,900 participants in Ironman Wisconsin.
