MONROE - Milton's Drew Johnson made a jumper in the lane and was fouled with 26 seconds to go.
Johnson made the ensuing free throw with a fourth quarter comeback to stun the Cheesemakers 47-45.
Monroe (5-6, 1-3 Badger South) led 40-32 entering the fourth quarter. The Red Hawks outscored the Cheesemakers 15-5 in the fourth. Milton senior Nick Johnson scored on a putback with 1:45 to go to give the Red Hawks a two-point lead. Monroe senior guard Kylan Helmeid, who scored a team-high 12 points, drilled a 3-pointer to put the Cheesemakers up 45-44. That set the stage for the Red Hawks to close it out with a three-point play.
"It's tough because we did so many things well," Monroe coach Pat Murphy said. "You have to do it for four quarters. We continue to have lapses where we don't play defense, rebound or pass and catch the ball the way we need to. You want to play four good quarters and if you don't you will have a hard time winning in this league. We have to take that to heart. It's a four quarter game for a reason."
Monroe seniors Alex Hendrickson and Jake Hirsbrunner each added nine points. Johnson led Milton with 15 points. He shot 12 free throws and the Cheesemakers as a team shot 11 and were 7 of 11.
"He (Johnson) shot more free throws than we did as a team," Murphy said. "That speaks volumes."
