STOUGHTON - The Monroe girls basketball team picked up its first Badger South Conference win, hanging on to edge Stoughton 43-38 Tuesday night.
Monroe seniors Kyleigh Sellnow and Kylee Ritschard each scored 14 points to lead the Cheesemakers.
"We knew it was an important game," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "We were both looking to get our first win in conference. We knew in the first two games we played the two conference favorites in Madison Edgewood and Milton."
Monroe (5-4, 1-2 Badger South) led 11-10 after the first quarter and trailed the Vikings 20-18 at halftime. The Cheesemakers outscored the Vikings 13-7 in the third quarter. Sellnow hit four free throws in the fourth quarter to help seal the win.
Monroe junior Brooke McBain helped give the Cheesemakers some offensive balance as she scored 10.
Mathiason said the team did a great job of coming out and playing defense in the second half and the Cheesemakers were able to build a 39-30 lead.
"They (Stoughton) had to work hard to make a basket," Mathiason said.
