Monroe hockey grabs first win Saturday

MONROE - Senior Tyler Johnson scored five goals to power the Monroe boys hockey co-op to its first win - 12-7 - over Sparta on Saturday.

Monroe freshman Travis Edmunds had two goals. The Avalanche outshot Sparta 46-37. Senior Cade Martin of Belleville scored two goals and had four assists to lead the Avalanche to the win.

"We were finally able to get everything together and get the win," Monroe coach Josh Smith said. "It's halfway through the season and hopefully this is the turning point of our season."

The Avalanche (1-13) erupted for five goals in the first period including two goals by Johnson. Edmunds scored the first goal for the Avalanche at the 15 minute, 41 second mark in the first period. Martin scored a goal about one minute later to extend the lead to 2-0. The Avalanche led 5-4 at the end of the first period.

After Sparta took a short-lived 6-5 lead in the second period, the Avalanche answered. Johnson scored the game-tying goal on an assist by Riley Jones of Darlington at 4:14 in the second period.

Monroe senior Jake Ritschards scored the go-ahead goal on a pass from Johnson at the 11:38 mark in the third period to give the Avalanche a 7-6 lead. Monroe broke the game open scoring six goals in the third period. Johnson scored two goals and Martin and Edmunds each tacked on goals to seal the win for the Avalanche.
