MADISON - The Monroe High School girls tennis team was no match for Madison Edgewood on Thursday.

Edgewood, which was the WIAA Division 2 state runner-up last year, dominated the Badger South Conference dual and won

7-0. The Crusaders went 82-6 in total games.

The match was originally scheduled for Aug. 28 but was rained out.

"Edgewood is in a completely different league than most of the Badger Conference," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "They are one of the top ranked teams in Division 2 and will have a strong chance to

win the team state tournament."

Edgewood junior Emma Sango at No. 1 singles defeated Monroe senior Eva Priewe 6-0, 6-1. Edgewood junior Jessica Inman at No. 2 singles defeated Monroe senior Katie Demianiuk 6-0, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, Britta Hovde toppled Monroe sophomore Ashley Placek 6-1, 6-0. Edgewood senior Reilly Gierhardt upended Monroe sophomore Skye Allen 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.

The Crusaders' No. 1 doubles team of juniors Abby Fox and Maddie Molitor beat the Cheesemaker sophomores Maggie Setterstrom and Hallie Signer Rabotski 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2 doubles, Edgewood seniors JoJo Munns and Sarah Peterson knocked off Monroe seniors Hannah Zweifel and Shannon Rabotski 6-0, 6-1. At No. 3 doubles, the Crusaders' Grace Drake and Cosette Smith defeated Monroe seniors Maija Liimatainen 6-1, 6-0.

"I'm proud of the fact that the girls never quit," Saugstad said. "Edgewood was overwhelming us with their power and accuracy, but the girls continued trying to execute our strategy and never gave up. We showed on some individual points we could compete with Edgewood, but against such good athletes it's

tough to string together four good points to get a game."

The Cheesemakers are off until next Thursday when they host Stoughton. Monroe has four more duals on its schedule.
