Monroe has big day at subsectionals

ELKHORN - Monroe had three singles players and a doubles team go undefeated Monday in the first day of the WIAA Division 1 Elkhorn Tennis Subsectional. The wins helped the Cheesemakers earn a second-place finish as a team after play ended.

Kristin McArdle won her only match in the No. 1 singles bracket, knocking off Beloit Turner's 6-3, 6-3.

At No. 2 singles, Ellie Shuda won both of her matches: 6-1, 7-5 over Lake Geneva Badger's Jenny Skarda and 6-1, 6-1 against Delavan-Darien's Sam Hoyord.

Lily Priewe, playing at No. 3 singles, blanked Lake Geneva Badger's Briana Bogan 6-0, 6-0 and rolled past Burlington's Dani Evert 6-0, 6-1.

Monroe's No. 1 doubles team of Kelsey Erickson and Brooke McBain knocked off their Delavan-Darien opponents 6-2, 6-3.

At No. 3 doubles, Elisabeth Brunner and Ellie Grossen won their first match over Lake Geneva Badger 6-3, 7-5. In the second round, Janesville Parker's No. 2 doubles tandem handed the Cheesemakers a three-set loss, 6-0, 5-7, 6-1.

Alyssa Quinn, Monroe's No. 4 singles player, won her opening match 6-0, 6-0 over Lake Geneva Badger's Stephanie Georgen, but fell to Janesville Parker's Terri Harmata in the second round, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Monroe's No. 2 doubles duo of Becca Flannery and Rachel Thompson lost its opening-round match to Burlington 6-4, 6-4.

Janesville Parker (22 points) was the only team that scored higher than Monroe (16) in the nine-team subsectional. Play resumes today. Those who advance to sectionals will play Thursday and Friday at Lake Geneva Badger High School.
