MONROE - For Monroe junior Isaac Allen, the competition every day in the wrestling room offers more incentive to get better.
The Monroe wrestling team's competitive streak was on display Friday night as Stoughton, ranked No. 3 in the Wisconsin Wrestling Online Division 1 poll, defeated the Cheesemakers in a dual meet 49-24. The Vikings have seven wrestlers ranked in the top 10 in the state from 106 to 160 pounds.
"Everyone is getting better," said Allen, who defeated Stoughton senior Austin Sobojinski 6-4 with a takedown in overtime at 182 pounds. "Everyone is in great shape. We are all pushing each other. It's pretty good compared to last year when we scored just nine points. It's definitely a lot of improvement."
After falling behind, 21-0, the Cheesemakers dominated the upper weights and won five straight matches to take a short-lived 24-21 lead.
"I thought we wrestled really hard from top to bottom," Monroe coach Tom Witt said. "They have guys who are backups who could be varsity wrestlers. I'm pleased and very happy with the performance we had."
The Cheesemakers' run of five wins started with sophomore Dempzy Foley at 170. Foley, who wrestled up a weight class due to the injury of his brother McKenzy Foley, scored on a reversal and near fall at the end of the second period to take a 9-4 lead on Stoughton junior Trevar Helland. Foley capped the scoring burst by pinning Helland in 4 minutes, 57 seconds to give the Cheesemakers their first win.
"I wanted to start us off so we could get going," Foley said. "It's a good win because they are Division 1."
Witt likes the fact that Foley isn't overwhelmed by having to wrestle in an unenviable position.
"He's not afraid to wrestle from his back," Witt said. "He has strong legs and is powerful in his hips."
Allen then knocked off Sobojinski to cut the Vikings' lead to 21-9.
"When I got him up and over I knew I had him," Allen said of his takedown in overtime.
Witt said Allen should have won the match in regulation.
"Isaac lost his composure a little bit," Witt said. "He got put in a bad position and gave him a reversal to tie the match. He battled and got it done."
At 195, Monroe junior Hayden Arneson, ranked seventh in Division 2, was fueled by a first-period takedown to take a 2-0 lead into the third period. Arneson sealed a 4-0 win over Stoughton senior Jacob Groleau with a reversal in the third period.
At 220, Monroe senior Traiten Gorr , ranked fourth in Division 2, pinned Stoughton sophomore Aodan Marshall in 3:02, and at heavyweight, junior Kyle Walter pinned Stoughton senior Erik Haried in 3:06 to give the Cheesemakers a 24-21 lead.
"It was good to see when our 285-pounder won we were ahead of Stoughton for once," Foley said.
The Vikings won five straight matches to close out the dual meet win. The Vikings picked up pins from Hunter Lewis (106), ranked 10th in Division 1; Brandon Klein (113), ranked first; and Kaleb Louis (126), ranked second at 120.
The Vikings also got a pin from junior Garrett Model, ranked third at 138, and a pin from senior Collin Kraus, ranked No. 1 at 152. Stoughton junior Tristan Jenny, ranked fifth at 126, defeated Monroe junior Cole Murray at 132, 8-0.
"The competition in their room is at the lower weights," Witt said. "To hold a team like that to under 50 points and to score 24 points is a better performance than what we had against Milton."
