MONROE - As the wrestling season nears the championship stage, Monroe senior Trevor Gorr just wants to defend his home turf.
At 220 pounds, Gorr was one of five champions for the Cheesemakers which won the Monroe Invitational 220-156.5 over Whitewater Saturday. Monroe has now won the tournament three of the last four years.
"It's my senior year and I didn't want to lose in our home tournament," Gorr said. "I don't think I have lost at home this year. We came in with the mindset to win it and it's ours to win."
It was all Cheesemakers in the finals. In addition to Trevor Gorr, freshman McKenzy Foley (120), senior Kevin Klopfenstein (138), junior Troy Gorr (195) and junior heavyweight Brett Zimmerman each won titles.
Monroe senior Aaron Hesgard (132) finished second and junior Ryan Hughes (160) also took second. Senior Jesse Keizer (126), sophomore Cody Wolf (145) and senior Dusty Burkhalter each finished third while freshman Traiten Gorr (170) took fourth.
"I think we kind of expected it," Monroe coach Jeriamy Jackson said. "We knew without Lancaster here we had a shot. We still had to come out and wrestle. They were not just going to give it to us."
Darlington finished sixth (64) led by second-place finishes from Alex Schulte (170) and Cruz Bahena at heavyweight. Darlington's Zach Wolf (220) added a third-place finish.
Trevor Gorr, (34-2) ranked fourth at 220 in the Division 2 Wisconsin Wrestling Online poll, won his third straight Monroe Invite title. Gorr pinned Darlington's Zach Wolf in 1:49 and then pinned Whitewater's Daniel Soto in 55 seconds in the finals.
Foley went 4-0 at the tournament. He pinned Poynette's Scott Reigel in 1:02 and then defeated Darlington's Brandon Aardahl 12-1. Foley edged Whitewater's Osvaldo Serna 7-5 and pinned Clinton's Josh Curtis in the championship match in 4:27.
"He didn't surprise me," Jackson said of Foley. "He has wrestled some good competition this year. He did some things today where he didn't make as many mistakes and that is why he won. He grinded out wins."
Foley has been wrestling since second grade, but he is still making the adjustment to wrestling on the varsity.
"I'm really nervous when I wrestle," he said. "I pace in circles and try not to focus on who I'm wrestling. I try not to look at their records. It's hard because I'm trying to make everyone happy by winning my matches."
Klopfenstein, (31-4) ranked No. 6 in Division 2, pinned Whitewater's Natahan Difiori in 1:02 and then pinned Poynette's Cole Workman in 58 seconds. He pinned Belmont-Platteville's John Hentrich in 1:54 and defeated Cuba City-Southwestern's Josh Donar 13-1.
"It feels good because I won my sophomore year and lost in the finals last year," Klopfenstein said. "I wanted to come back and get that title again."
Klopfenstein is still working on getting sharper before the Badger Conference and Evansville regional.
"I feel like I can get better," he said. "I'm just shooting for that spot at state."
Troy Gorr pinned Whitewater's Tommy DuVal in 5:22 and then pinned Cuba City-Southwestern's Brett Wilson in 3:19. He capped off the tournament by pinning teammate Austin Minder in 5:56.
Zimmerman, (26-7) ranked eighth, was just as impressive. After a first round bye, he pinned Cuba City-Southwestern's Cal Grutz in 34 seconds. In the title match, Zimmerman (26-7) pinned Bahena in 1:35.
Hesgard, in the first round, pinned Big Foot-Williams Bay's Taylor Synove in 34 seconds. In the semifinals, he pinned Clinton's Jason Rosales in 1:26. Hesgard lost a hard fought match to Parkview's Alex Hauri 4-3 in the championship match.
Hughes started the tournament strong pinning Big Foot-Williams Bay's Tyler Wicks in 56 seconds. He then defeated Cuba City-Southwestern's Lucas Kastner 5-4 in the final 10 seconds. Hughes in the title match was pinned by Parkview's Derek Gerber in 4:15.
The third-place finishers, including Keizer, Wolf and Burkhalter, each finished 3-1 and recovered after early losses. Keizer had three pins and pinned Clinton's Jaks Teubert in the third place match in 1:56. Wolf also posted three pins and pinned Poynette's Dylan Doherty in the third place match in 1:19. Burkhalter bounced back after a 3-1 loss to Clinton's Mitch Wellnitz. He came back with two pins and then avenged a loss to Wellnitz by beating him 5-2.
Monroe wrestles at Milton on Friday and then hosts Edgerton on Monday, Jan. 28.
"At this point in the year, we are not putting anything new in," Jackson said. "We just have to stay healthy and positive."
