MONONA - The Monroe High School wrestling team turned in a dominating performance, racking up nine pins en route to a 64-12 dual meet win over Monona Grove-McFarland on Friday.
Monona Grove is in the third year of its cooperative wrestling program and it's the first year it has wrestled a varsity schedule in the conference.
"Oregon beat them earlier in the year and we handled Oregon," Monroe coach Tom Witt said. "I expected this. We were hoping to score a few more points. They are a young team. Monona Grove and McFarland's youth teams are together. You have to start somewhere."
Monroe (7-4, 3-2 Badger South) won 11 of the 14 matches.
Monroe's David Andrews at 120 pounds won on a pin in 1 minute, 6 seconds. Timmy Anderson (126) came through with a pin in 1:19, and junior Cole Murray (132) delivered a pin in 1:26.
Monroe sophomore Sam Kind (138) won on a 14-0 major decision. Sophomore teammate Dempzy Foley (160) received a forfeit. Senior Jared Amacher (170) came through with a pin in 3:54, and junior Isaac Allen (182) won on a pin in 2:39. Monroe junior Hayden Arneson (195), ranked No. 8 in the Wisconsin Wrestling Online Division 2 poll, delivered a pin in 1:35 to improve to 20-7. Senior Traiten Gorr (220), ranked No. 3, won on a pin in 1:37 to improve to 25-1. Junior teammate Kyle Walter at heavyweight also won on a pin in 2:56 and improved his record to 21-7. Monroe freshman Gabe Witt (106) posted a pin in 2:13.
The Cheesemakers will host the Monroe Invitational at 9:30 a.m. today. The Black Hawk-Darlington wrestling team, which is honorable mention in the Division 3 state team rankings, is expected to contend for the team title along with Monroe and Prairie du Chien. Black Hawk-Darlington has two wrestlers ranked, including senior Taylor Evenstad (220), No. 3 in Division 3, and senior Conrad Blosch (182), ranked No. 12.
"It's usually a full squad that wins a tournament, and we have that," Witt said. "Hopefully, we are in the mix. We will see what happens."
