MONONA - The Monroe boys golf team finished ninth place at the Monona Grove Invitational Thursday at the Oaks Golf Course.
Monroe sophomore Nick Baumann was the top golfer for the Cheesemakers with a round of 78. Baumann birdied holes No. 8, 9, 13 and 15.
The Cheesemakers tied for ninth as a team (323) with Fort Atkinson. Marquette University shot a 299 to edge Waunakee (303) for the team title. Badger South rival Oregon took third place (311).
Monroe senior Matt Miller carded a 79 and had two birdies. He birdied No. 1 and No. 6. Tanner Thompson finished with an 80 and had a birdie on No. 4. Monroe's Eric Bush carded an 89 and had birdies on No. 2, No. 8 and No. 9, but also finished with two double bogeys, a triple bogey and a quadruple bogey.
"I'm happy with our performance this season thus far," Monroe coach Braden Rindy said. "We know we need to improve and we are confident that we can make a run here in the near future."
