REEDSBURG - The Monroe girls tennis team swept every singles match en route to a season-opening 6-1 win over Reedsburg Friday, Aug. 23.
Monroe senior Allie Coplien at No. 1 singles defeated Reedsburg's Kaylie Polk 6-1, 3-6, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, Monroe junior Chelsea Miller defeated Ali Hoekstra 7-5, 6-2 and Eva Priewe at No. 3 singles beat Aly Pfaff 6-1, 6-1. Monroe sophomore Katie Demianiuk at No. 4 singles defeated Mary Kate Dischler 6-0, 6-0.
"We had a lot of match jitters going on today," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "Our singles lineup did a lot of good things today. Eva Priewe and Katie Demianiuk played really well from the start to finish. It was a great start to the season for our two sophomores."
Coplien played her first singles match in three years when she was a singles player on JV.
"Allie was definitely nervous and it showed when she got behind in the second set," Saugstad said. "Allie overcame those nerves and came out strong in the third set and took the set in about 10 minutes. She relaxed and started hitting the ball well."
Monroe seniors Ellie Grossen and Chandra McGuire at No. 1 doubles defeated Reedsburg's Laine Greenwood and Emma Greenwood 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. At No. 2 doubles, the Cheesemakers' Paige Prien and Erin Gellings defeated Shelbi Stowers and Carley Suemnicht 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-4. At No. 3 doubles, Reedsburg's Larissa Jaech and Hailey Rockweiler defeated Monroe's Alisa Fager and Amber Jenson 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
"We struggled quite a bit in doubles," Saugstad said. "We've been working a lot in practice on how to move in doubles and we struggled with that today. Our shots just weren't consistent and we were floating a lot of them."
