EAST TROY - The Monroe girls tennis team dropped three matches in the season-opening East Troy Quad on Monday.

The Cheesemakers lost to East Troy 7-0 and lost to Union Grove and Whitewater 7-0.

The Cheesemakers used several different lineups as they look to find their best combination.

"Today was a learning experience for our team," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said in an email. "We played three teams who had a significantly larger number of returning players than we did. In many moments you could tell our inexperience, but this is just the first tournament of the season and we will improve from here."

Monroe's Sam Huizenga and Parris Bunker lost a three-set match at No. 2 doubles in three sets to East Troy's Maddie Peters and Paige Metcalf 0-6, 6-1, 10-5.

"Sam Huizenga and Parris Bunker had some strong moments of play," Saugstad said. "They lost a three-set match at No. 2 doubles and were forced to move up to No. 1 doubles and played another close match. Those two improved their footwork throughout the day and gained a lot of valuable experience."

At No. 1 doubles, Whitewater's Maggie Hough and Hannah Delaney defeated Bunker and Huizenga 6-3, 7-5.

At No. 1 singles, Monroe freshman Grace Tostrud lost to East Troy's Lora Leach 6-1, 6-1.

Monroe junior Maggie Setterstrom made the switch to No. 2 singles after playing two years at doubles. Setterstrom lost to East Troy's Anna Stephan 6-3, 6-4. She rolled her ankle in the first match and lost to Union Grove's Nixie Grajera 6-2, 6-2. She didn't play a third match due to the injury.

"After she rolled her ankle that limited her some," Saugstad said. "Maggie definitely has some tools that could be effective in singles," Saugstad said. "We just need to figure out how to help her put together a strong gameplan."

Monroe freshman Jensen Christensen dropped a match to East Troy's Alison Barth 6-1, 6-2.

At No. 4 singles, East Troy's Mikayla Lamping knocked off the Cheesemakers' Jessa Lucas 6-0, 6-1.

In the other doubles matches, the Trojans' No. 1 doubles team of Erin Rice and Mackenzie Lindow defeated the Cheesemakers' Ashley Placek and Hallie Signer 6-1, 6-3. At No. 3 doubles, East Troy's Kelly Griffa and Allison Slusar beat Monroe's Skye Allen and Kiara Miller 6-2, 6-3.

After a few days of practice, the Cheesemakers will have six matches or tournaments in the next 10 days starting Saturday with the Monroe Doubles Invitational.

"We'll only get better once we find our best lineup and we get more practice in those positions," Saugstad said.
