MADISON - The Monroe girls cross country team ran to a seventh place finish in the Badger Challenge at Lake Farm Park on Tuesday.
The race included all 14 Badger Conference schools and there are separate races for freshmen/sophomore and junior/senior runners. Places didn't factor into the final results. The lowest five times are used to score each team.
"As a team our seventh place finish was O.K." Monroe coach Brian Jefferson said. "It was an absolutely beautiful night to race with some of the region's top competition. We still have a long ways to go and the girls recognize that, we are far from finished."
Monroe's Abby Rogerson, in the junior/senior race, finished 11th place with a time of 16 minutes, 20 seconds, one spot away from medaling.
"Abby has put some good consistent racing together and each race she gets a little bit stronger," Jefferson said. "Tonight Abby did a fine job of competing the entire 4,000 meters which isn't always an easy thing to do."
In the frosh/soph race Nicole Witt led the way finishing 16th with a time of 17:00. Kelley Baumann took 20th with a PR of 17:06. The other top runners for the Cheesemakers included Therese Hughes (17:12) and Alyssa Dale (17:29).
"Our order from No. 2 through No. 4 has varied a bit throughout the season, but the times have been consistent," Jefferson said. "The closer we can group these runners, Nicole, Kelley, Therese and Alyssa, and the closer we can get them to Abby the better. It is nice to have the close group because they feed off of each other. That strength in numbers can give you that extra boost during the race."
