FORT ATKINSON - The Monroe High School girls track and field team showed its dominance and depth in the triple jump on Friday at the Fort Atkinson Invitational.
The Cheesemakers swept the top two spots in the event en route to finishing second as a team in the meet with a total of 112 points.
Mount Horeb won the nine-team invitational with 122 points.
Monroe senior Abby Oudinot won the triple jump (33 feet, 8 inches) and took third in the 200 (28.45 seconds). Junior teammate junior Alicia Kuester finished second in the triple jump (33-2) and third in the long jump (15-8).
"I was hoping for that," Monroe girls track coach Matt Davis said of the Cheesemakers' 1-2 finish in the triple jump. "I think they both performed how we wanted them to. I was happy to see that. Alicia plays second fiddle to Abby in the triple jump. Alicia is an outstanding jumper in her own right. They will do well at conference."
Oudinot was injured during the Fort Atkinson Invitational last year and missed the rest of the season.
"To have her come back, compete and win it shows how tough she is," Davis said.
Monroe junior Jordan Hirsbrunner won the 300 hurdles (46.82) and won the high jump (5-2). Hirsbrunner's time in the 300 hurdles is the best Division 2 time this year.
Hirsbrunner teamed with senior Isabel Bazley, Ganshert and sophomore Mya Waterman to win the 1,600 relay in 4 minutes, 6.34 seconds.
"Right now that puts them second in the state in Division 2," Davis said of the 1,600 relay team's time. "That is an outstanding time. We didn't have anyone to run with us. If we would have had more competition we could have gone quicker."
Monroe freshman Cammi Ganshert finished fourth in the 100 (13.17). Ganshert had the fastest time in the preliminaries of the 200 (26.96), but Davis scratched her so she could get ready for the 1,600 relay.
Sophomore Rachel Meier finished second in the 800 (2:29.72). Junior teammate Casey Rielly took second in the 100 hurdles (16.84). Waterman and Bazley teamed with Allyce Fahrney and Meier to take second in the 3,200 relay (10:16.76). Monroe junior Josie Eberle took third in the pole vault (8-0).
The Cheesemakers' 3,200 relay team, which made a run to state last year, is ahead of last season's pace.
"It's way ahead of where they were last year at this time," Davis said. "Allyce has really stepped up and wants it. All of our relays are looking really good."
In the boys meet, the Cheesemakers finished fourth (82). Monona Grove ran away with the title 180-113 over Fort Atkinson.
Monroe senior Thang Lu won the 800 with a meet record time of 1:57.32 and sophomore Jonah Tostrud finished second (2:02.86).
Monroe boys track coach Scott Mosher said Lu's time in the 800 is one of the top three times in Division 2 in the state this year.
"It was a great race by Thang," Mosher said. "He runs away from the competition."
Tostrud ran two identical splits of 1:01 in the 800.
"When you do that you can go much faster," Mosher said. "He was running for place and not time."
Monroe junior Trevor Aebly took second in the 110 high hurdles (16.31).
"Trevor has really been coming along," Mosher said. "His form is getting better and better."
Junior Jake Kind finished second in the long jump (20-1 1/4 inches).
Monroe junior Parker Ingold took third in the 3,200 (10:22.73).
Monroe senior Mitch Keith took fourth in the pole vault (12-0), and sophomore Brayden Zettle was fourth in the triple jump (40-2).
Zettle just adjusted his mark for the triple jump in practice recently.
"He had a lot of scratches," Mosher said. "He was struggling to find his mark. When he does he will go 42 or 43 feet."
