MONROE - Mya Waterman may have turned some heads with the way she ran in winning the 400-meter dash Thursday in a quad dual with Monona Grove, Fort Atkinson and Milton Thursday.

Waterman won the 400 with a time of 1 minute, 6.14 seconds. She was running even with freshman teammate Rachel Meier until she pulled away down the stretch to nip Meier at the finish.

The Cheesemakers may have discovered another middle distance runner who will push for a spot on some relays.

"She (Meier) helped me go faster and helped push me to go my hardest," Waterman said. "I PRd by a lot. I just started running with her this year. I was kind of surprised because she's usually a better runner. I will definitely be running a lot more 400."

Monroe won eight of the 18 events en route to winning the meet with 102 points, which was well ahead of Fort Atkinson (80), Milton (33) and Monona Grove (32).

Since the meet for the Cheesemakers was rescheduled from Tuesday, Monroe now has back-to-back meets with the Simpson Relays today.

"We made this a meet to get in a lot of kids," Monroe girls track coach Matt Davis said. "We will set it (Simpson Relays) up to do the best we possibly can."

Monroe sophomore Ciara Kaderly won the 800 (2:34.74) and Casey Rielly finished first in the 300 hurdles (52.78).

"I mainly did this race to get my time in the 800 because I plan on running in a lot of 4x800 relays," Kaderly said. "This was my first outdoor 800. I feel like it went well. I did better than I thought."

Monroe sophomore Jordan Hirsbrunner won the 100 hurdles (16.38) and Rielly took second (17.38) and Alacia Kuester was third (17.78). Monroe's Brooke Rowe finished first in the shot put (27-7) and second place in the discus (76-7). Hirsbrunner added a second-place finish in the long jump (14-10 3/4).

Monroe junior Abby Oudinot won the 100 (13.24) and she anchored the Cheesemakers' 400 relay team, which dropped the baton on the final exchange.

"We really loaded up the 100," Davis said. "It was a warmup for the 400 relay for tomorrow."

Oudinot is focused on perfecting the handoffs in the 400 relay for the Simpson Relays.

"There will be a lot more teams there bringing their A-game," she said of tonight's Simpson Relays. "In the 400 relay, we ran as good as we could have. It could have gone better."

The Cheesemakers won the 3,200 relay with a time of 11:37 and finished first in the 1,600 relay (5:00).

In the boys' meet, Monroe junior Tyler Sobacki won the 110 high hurdles (16.18). Fort Atkinson (128) won the meet over the Cheesemakers (76). Milton took third (50) followed by Monona Grove's junior varsity (13).

"I don't think it was one of my best races I have done," Sobacki said. "I hit some of the hurdles."

Sobacki also runs the 300 hurdles and is working to develop as a triple jumper. However, the 110 hurdles are his favorite event.

"You just have to go out as hard as you can," Sobacki said. "If you hit a hurdle you have to keep going strong."

Sobacki said the meet was a great way to get the right mindset for the shuttle hurdle relay for the Simpson Relays.

The Cheesemakers swept the top three spots in the 1,600. Freshman Dylan Scace finished first in the 1,600 (4:44.1) and Jonah Tostrud took second (4:52.8) followed by Justin Batz who was third (4:53.6). Monroe sophomore Dillon Storey won the 400 (57.71).

Monroe senior Mitch Keith finished first place in the pole vault clearing 10-6, which matched a season best. Monroe senior Blain Harpstrite won the 100 (11.47) and senior Cody Wolf took second (11.66).

The Cheesemakers' 3,200 relay team of Jason Koller, Drake Ingold, Parker Ingold and Jake Meier won with a time of 9:13.8.

Monroe boys track coach Curt Miller said they limited several athletes and had them run just one or two events. Monroe senior Cody Faust, junior Thang Lu and Alex Koller didn't compete.

"We wanted to save some of their legs for tonight," Miller said. 'We want them to be fresh for the Simpson Relays."
