PLATTEVILLE - The Monroe girls cross country team ran to a fourth-place finish in the large schools Platteville Invitational on Saturday.

Dodgeville-Mineral Point outdistanced Madison Edgewood 29-51 for the title. The Cheesemakers finished behind three schools who are ranked in Division 2.

"Without two of our top seven runners, that is quite an accomplishment," Monroe coach Brian Jefferson said. "It was also a good opportunity to see who would step up to the plate and fill the holes."

Monroe junior Abby Rogerson finished 18th (16:28) and sophomore Nicole Witt took 25th (16:49) to lead the Cheesemakers.

"In what amounts to a sectional preview, both the JV and varsity set the table for a very encouraging finish to the season," Jefferson said.

Monroe's Alyssa Dale finished 30th (17:16, Molly Hlubek took 35th (17:36) and Mollie Bazley was 36th (17:37).

"Molly and Mollie really stepped it up for us," Jefferson said. "Both girls raced to their best time of the season and Mollie Bazley ran her all-time best. Without Therese Hughes and Kelley Baumann, it was important for someone to step up and try to fill the void. Both looked relaxed and strong. At the same time, they elevated themselves to a new level which we need as we get closer to our conference meet."

Dana Starck ran her first varsity race.

"Dana did not back down," Jefferson said. "She was just shy of her career PR. Dana has had a good season and she deserved this opportunity to compete at the varsity level."

Brodhead-Juda finished last (250 points) out of 11 teams. Morganne Goecks finished 26th (17:05) to lead the Cardinals. Jacque Conway took 43rd (18:02) and Meg Duffield was 48th (18:26).

Darlington had all five of its runners in the top 14 to run away with the small schools title over Boscobel 44-61. Darlington senior Hannah Robiolio finished fourth (15:57) and Christa Wamsley took fifth (15:57). Darlington senior Amy Jorgenson finished 10th (16:32), Cheyenne Wolfe took 11th (16:34) and Harley Douglas was 14th (16:51).

Pecatonica-Argyle's Kendra Sigg finished third (15:55) to lead the Vikings. Pecatonica-Argyle finished last out of 10 teams. Emma Marion took 40th (18:34) for the Vikings.

New Glarus-Monticello (102 points) took third as a team. New Glarus-Monticello junior Madeline Brunner finished second with a time of 15:43 to lead the Knights. LouAnn Judd was eighth (16:17) and Carly Duerst was 17th (17:07).

Monroe will run at the Baertschi Invite in Albany on Saturday and then at conference at Milton Oct. 15.
