STOUGHTON - Monroe freshman Kayla Einbeck started out the outdoor track season with a bang, winning the 1,600-meter run in a double dual at Stoughton.
Einbeck won the race with a time of 6 minutes, 1 second.
"She won it by a ton," Monroe girls track coach Doug Miller said.
Monroe split the double dual, defeating Fort Atkinson 83-63 and losing to Stoughton 95-51. The Monroe boys track team also split the double dual knocking off Stoughton 78-68 and losing to Fort Atkinson 82-64. The conference dual meets don't factor into determining the Badger South Conference champion. The champion is determined by the conference meet at the end of the season.
"This meet absolutely doesn't mean anything," Monroe boys track coach Curt Miller said. "If we wanted to win this meet we would have set it up differently."
Einbeck was one of three champions for the Monroe girls track team. Sophomore Alyssa Dale won the 3,200 (12:23.2) and the Cheesemakers' 800 relay team of Abby Oudinot, Jess Jackson, Mafer Larraga and Lauren Werth won the 800 relay (1:55.2).
"I'm very pleased," Doug Miller said. "We performed well. I really liked our effort. We have a lot of young kids and we have good things in front of us. It was nice to see everyone get a chance to compete."
Junior Tre Voegeli took second in the pole vault (9 feet) and junior Georgie Myers finished second in the high jump (4'8"). Werth took second in the 100 (:13.12) and the 200 (:28.6). Isabel Bazley finished second in the 800 (2:40) and senior Lizzy Dale took second in the 400 (1:06.8). The Cheesemakers' 3,200 relay team of Lizzy Dale, Bazley, Therese Hughes and Mariah Richter finished first place.
In the boys meet, junior Grant Keith won the pole vault (10-6) and senior A.J. Cifuentes took first in the 1,600 (4:46).
"A.J. ... he's really come on strong," coach Curt Miller said. "He's had a nice career, but he's really elevated his level."
The Cheesemakers stacked the 800 with five runners headed to the Kansas Relays including Ethan Moehn, Alex Barenklau, Steve Christiansen, Jake Hirsbrunner and Payton Hoesly. All five finished in about 2:08 to take the top spot in the event.
Curt Miller said each runner was going to run 600 meters and then coast the last 200.
"That's pretty impressive," he said, of his five runners being able to win handily after coasting. "Those guys look like they are tuned up and ready to go. I think they can go out (to Kansas) and represent Monroe and represent Wisconsin at a high level. I'm real excited for them."
The Cheesemakers swept the top two spots in the 1,600 relay. Dakota Phillips, Cody Faust, Jarod Barenklau and Cifuentes finished first with a time of 3:47.3. The Cheesemakers' other 1,600 relay team of Seth Calaway, Eric Bush, Alex Koller and Noah Tostrud finished second with a time of 3:48.7.
"Our two relays battled and they finished (one-two)," Curt Miller said. "That's impressive depth with not a lot of our top kids in it."
