STOUGHTON - The Monroe boys tennis team picked up its first Badger South Conference win, 5-2 over Stoughton on Monday.
"It was not an easy win tonight," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "I'm proud of the way that there was no quitting on the court. For the first time this year, when it was a big point or a game we really needed to win, the boys got the job done."
The Cheesemakers won three of the four singles matches. Monroe junior David Shon at No. 1 singles defeated Stoughton's Matthew Gharrity in three sets 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-1. It was Shon's first win this year and clinched the team win for the Cheesemakers. Monroe junior Matt Monahan at No. 2 singles defeated Nathan Lawlor 6-1, 6-0 and freshman Silas Setterstrom at No. 4 singles beat Stefan Butterbrodt in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
"Matt was on top of his game," Saugstad said. "He looked calm and played with confidence and was hitting great, consistent shots from the baseline. Matt was looking really good at the end of last season, and in his last two matches he seems to be finding that same groove."
Setterstrom had to work his way back into tennis form.
"Silas hasn't picked up a racquet in nearly a week because he has been gone at a family wedding, so early in the match he definitely had a little rust on his game," Saugstad said. "To Silas' credit, he hung in there and did what he needed to do to win."
Junior Jeremy Miller at No. 3 singles lost to Stoughton's Gabe Rowley 7-6 (4), 6-2.
At No. 1 doubles, Monroe senior Mark Jenson and junior Kevin Noriega defeated Stoughton's Austin Scheel and Asher McMullin 6-4, 7-5. Jenson and Noriega trailed 5-2 in the second set before storming back. The Cheesemakers' No. 1 doubles duo fought off a few set points and won five straight to pull out a 7-5 win.
Mark and Kevin fought off a few set points, won 5 straight games and took the second set 7-5.
"Mark and Kevin left a few too many shots up during the match tonight, but they came up with the big shots when they needed them," Saugstad said. "When Mark and Kevin made their comeback, it seemed like the momentum they had going spread out to our entire team."
The Cheesemakers' No. 2 doubles team of senior Ellyott Baertschi and freshman Kody Althaus defeated Ike Landers and Alex Horneck 7-6 (1), 6-4. At No. 3 doubles, Stoughton's Zach Ziechert and Breckin Houser beat Monroe juniors Zach Hendrickson and Keyton Friske 6-0, 6-4.
Monroe will play at Oregon today.
"Oregon has a strong team with a lot of returning players so it was important for us to get a hard fought win tonight," Saugstad said.
