MONROE - Freshman Jensen Christensen won her first varsity singles match for the Monroe High School girls tennis team on Thursday.
Christensen defeated Portage sophomore Ellie Vorpahl 6-0, 6-7 (4), 6-1 at No. 3 singles, but the Warriors beat the Cheesemakers in the dual match 6-1.
"The first set was fairly easy, but things got tough in the second set," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said of Christensen's win. "To Jensen's credit, she bounced back from a difficult set and cruised to win the third set."
Portage captured all three doubles matches. Portage seniors Rachel Hicks and Greta McKinnon defeated Monroe juniors Ashley Placek and Hallie Signer 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Monroe junior Parris Bunker and sophomore Sam Huizenga lost to the Warriors' senior tandem of Grace Wilson and Dede Zewifel 6-4, 6-3. Portage seniors Emily Brust and Layne Leige beat Monroe junior Kiara Miller and sophomore Jessa Lucas 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3.
"These early season matches have been so important for us to gain experience," Saugstad said. "We had opportunities in six of our seven matches tonight, but only came away with one win."
At No. 1 singles, Portage junior Leah Hollander defeated Monroe freshman Grace Tostrud 6-4, 6-3. Monroe junior Maggie Setterstrom lost to Portage junior Caitlin Warren 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Portage junior Sophie Amend outlasted Monroe junior Skye Allen at No. 4 singles 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
