MILTON - A day after being swept by Madison Edgewood, the Cheesemakers returned to their winning ways on the tennis court.
"It was another tight match," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said, after his team's 4-3 victory at Milton. "We snuck out four wins, but it wasn't easy."
Monroe won two singles and two doubles matches.
Taylor Soddy knocked off Sebastian Pizzaro Yunez 6-3, 6-4 in the top singles match. Quinten L'Yvonnet won the No. 2 singles match over Jared Matchette 6-3, 6-2.
"Taylor played an aggressive style tonight. His opponent was jumping on his short shots so Taylor had to keep the ball deep," Saugstad said. "Quinten's opponent was a hard hitter, but was inconsistent at times. Quinten played smart and just kept the ball in and let his opponent make the mistakes."
Carson Root and Garrett Tschanz bounced back quickly after losing their first No. 1 doubles match of the season on Monday. The duo rolled by Tyson Bahn and Dylan Meyer, 6-3, 6-2.
"Carson and Garrett struggled with consistency tonight. They never got into a rhythm, but they did what they needed to do to win," Saugstad said.
Cristian Noriega and Jess Hager won the No. 2 doubles match, 6-3, 6-3.
"Cristian and Jess were leading for almost the entire match. They played good, consistent doubles tonight," Saugstad said.
Monroe finished fourth in the conference in dual wins, with Edgewood taking first, Oregon second and Fort Atkinson third.
"It's not where we wanted to finish and the boys feel like we're better than that. They'll get the chance to prove it at the conference tournament on Friday and Saturday," Saugstad said.
