Monroe falls short

MILTON - Monroe High School sophomore Nick Schumacher appeared to score a goal in the 61st minute off a free kick that would have cut the Milton soccer team's lead to one goal Tuesday.

However, the Cheesemakers were called for offsides, and the Red Hawks hung on to tip Monroe 2-0. For Monroe (2-5-1) it marked the first Badger South Conference game against a Milton team that was a state qualifier last year.

The Cheesemakers outshot the Red Hawks 10-7, Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said.

"We had more opportunities. We just didn't finish them," Vasquez said. "We just couldn't get that first goal to put some more pressure on them. We thought we outplayed them. We were just a little slower getting to the ball."

Milton's Scott Diancosiori scored a goal on a penalty kick at 16 minutes, 11 seconds after the Cheesemakers were called for pushing. The Red Hawks extended their lead to 2-0 on Nick Patrick's goal at 27:20.

Vasquez said he was planning to start sophomore Devan Schulte as goalkeeper, but he was injured in the junior varsity game. Monroe senior Atticus Pond played at goalkeeper and after the Red Hawks' second goal, the Cheesemakers brought him outside more to control the ball.

"We gambled for the rest of the first half and had him 40 yards out of the box," Vasquez said.
