MADISON - The Baldwin-Woodville softball team rolled into the state
tournament as the No. 1-ranked team in Division 2 and left little
doubt by cruising to a 7-0 victory over Monroe in Saturday's state
championship at Goodman Diamond.
The Blackhawks (28-1) won their 14th straight game and completed a
seven-game postseason run in which they outscored their opponents
55-3.
Sophomore pitcher Abby Klopp, who has lost just two games in two
varsity seasons, allowed Monroe one hit in each of the first four
innings but the Cheesemakers only advanced one runner as far as third
base. Klopp, who finished with 11 strikeouts, retired 11 straight
Cheesemakers to end the game.
Leadoff hitter Heidi Hinz was the offensive star for
Baldwin-Woodville, ripping a three-run home run off Monroe junior
pitcher Becca Armstrong in the second inning. The blast to left field
came moments after Armstrong was twice called for illegal pitches. She
was charged with four illegal pitches in the contest.
Hinz's blast gave the Blackhawks a 4-0 lead and they added one run in
the fifth and two in the seventh to claim the first state softball
title in school history. Baldwin-Woodville scored six of its seven
runs with two outs.
Sophomore first baseman Kayla Updike was 2-for-3 with a double,
freshman third baseman Kari Jordan had a single and senior center
fielder Kasey Gutzmer had a single to account for Monroe's offense.
The loss ended a 15-game winning streak for the Cheesemakers (22-8),
who finished state runner-up for the fourth time since winning the
state title in 2003.
