WAUNAKEE - The Monroe golf team did its part edging Sauk Prairie 2-1 in match play during the Badger Cup Thursday at the Springs Golf Course.

The Cheesemakers won two of the three matches against the Eagles to help the Badger South win the cup for the seventh straight year. The Badger Cup is set up by match play with the No. 1 golfers from the South playing stroke play against another top golfer from a team from the North. The No. 2 and 3 golfers play best ball against two from the North and the No. 4 and 5 golfers play a shamble that combines elements of a scramble with elements of stroke play. Each member of a team tees off and then the best ball is selected to play out in stroke play.

"It's just to have fun and a different way to play golf," Monroe coach Braden Rindy said. "You could compare it to the Ryder Cup. Golf is not just stroke play. It (the Badger Cup) is for camaraderie between the North and South. It's competitive and coaches are always talking smack."

Monroe sophomore Devon Boeck played as the No. 1 golfer and lost his matchup. In the best ball, Monroe sophomore Nick Baumann and senior Matt Miller won four more holes than their Sauk Prairie counterparts and got the win with three holes left.

Monroe junior Tanner Thompson and Eric Bush defeated the Eagles' No. 4 and No. 5 golfers by one shot.

Monroe will golf in the Division 2 regional at Lake Geneva Tuesday.
