MONROE - Monroe High School junior Hunter Weckerly picked up a rare win and loss in the same day against the Brodhead-Juda baseball team on Monday.

In the continuation of a suspended game from April 11 in Brodhead, Weckerly struggled with his control, walking three in the eighth inning, and Brodhead-Juda pulled out a 13-12 win. In the second game, Weckerly found his rhythm and pitched the Cheesemakers to a 9-3 win.

"He pitched much better in the second game," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said. "His control was much better."

The April 11 game was resumed with the teams tied at 12 in the seventh inning. Weckerly walked Brodhead-Juda senior Tyler Schwartzlow in the bottom of the eighth inning. Blake Burns moved Schwartzlow into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Weckerly then walked another batter. Junior Matt Schmitt reached on an error to load the bases. Weckerly then walked Brodhead-Juda junior Skyler Stuckey to push a run home, and the Cardinals pulled out a 13-12 win.

"When you walk three and have an error in the same inning they will score," Huffman said. "Hunter got into trouble and struggled with his control."

Schmitt earned the win for the Cardinals. He pitched one inning and gave up one hit and struck out two.

Brodhead-Juda junior Alex Nipple went 3-for-5 and had two RBI in the suspended game. Tyler Hoesly finished 2-for-4. Stuckey went 1-for-4 with a home run and five RBI.

With the split of the nonconference games, Monroe drops to 8-7.

Monroe senior Garrett Gogin went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two doubles. Senior Jaron Kuester went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a home run. Senior Brent Edmunds finished 2-for-4 with one RBI, and Weckerly was 2-for-5 with one RBI.

In the second game, Weckerly pitched a complete game and gave up one earned run on six hits. He struck out four and didn't issue a walk. The Cheesemakers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings. The Cardinals had a two-run third to tie the game. The Cheesemakers answered with a two-run bottom of the third to take a 4-2 lead. The Cheesemakers sealed the win with a four-run fifth.

Monroe's Brad Ripp tossed one shutout inning in relief.

Monroe junior Isaac Allen went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI. Gogin went 2-for-3 with a double. Both Monroe junior Cole Murray and Kuester each had two RBI. Murray delivered a key two-run single in the fifth.

Brodhead-Juda's Almonzo Friedly pitched 5 2⁄3 innings and gave up four earned runs on six hits. He struck out three and walked eight. Nipple tossed 1 1⁄3 innings in relief and gave up just one run on three hits.

Both Schwartzlow and Stuckey went 2-for-4 with one RBI to lead the Cardinals.
