MONROE - For coach Heidi Witt, the Monroe High School volleyball program is on the upswing.
The first week of volleyball practice has Witt eager for the Cheesemakers to take their first swings this year.
"The practices have been going really well," Witt said. "The girls are really pumped up to play."
The first two days of practice have been devoted to evaluating players.
"We want to see what players fit best in positions," Witt said. "We are really working on team play and communication. The girls have been bonding and have great team chemistry already and that is fun to watch."
Monroe is coming off a 15-16 overall mark and went 1-5 in the Badger South last season. The Cheesemakers lost a five-set thriller to River Valley in a WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinal.
Witt said the Cheesemakers have excelled in passing and communication so far in the first two practices.
"That (passing and communication) is huge in the game of volleyball," she said. "Once we have our passing and serving down a lot of great things can happen."
Monroe will play in a scrimmage at Waunakee on Saturday. The Cheesemakers will play Middleton and Kewaskum in their first pool matches. Each match will last 15 minutes.
"It's unconventional," she said. "It will help us decide on our lineup and give us an idea of what combinations will work
In the second pool, Monroe will play matches against Beaver Dam and River Valley, the team that defeated the Cheesemakers in a regional match last year.
"I'm hoping we can play really well against them," Witt said. "We have a really talented group. They are really determined to make things happen."
In the final 15-minute match of the scrimmage, the Cheesemakers will play Dodgeville.
With seven of the 13 players new to the varsity team, Witt is looking forward to the scrimmage to build confidence and momentum.
"We have some new girls to the varsity arena," she said. "It will help with some of the new girls what the play on varsity is like. It's a good learning tool for them."
