MONROE - It's been a slow start for the Monroe girls tennis team as far as getting a chance to play a home match.
Monroe rescheduled its non-conference match against Waunakee Thursday due to the threat of thunderstorms hitting the area, but the storms went north. The Cheesemakers were also forced to cancel their doubles invitational last weekend and will host Waunakee Monday, Sept. 15. Monroe finished second in the Baraboo tournament Monday and lost a non-conference match to Sauk Prairie 5-2 on Tuesday.
"The girls are definitely anxious to play in some matches," Monroe coach Tim Walsh said. "The more practice we can get in the better. It's a short season and we have been working on overheads, volleys and lobs. I believe it will work to our advantage."
One reason is Monroe junior Katie Demianiuk at No. 3 singles injured her arm, and Walsh said she will be sidelined about two weeks.
In the match against Sauk Prairie, the two wins for the Cheesemakers came from junior Eva Priewe at No. 2 singles and the No. 1 doubles team of seniors Paige Prien and Erin Gellings. Both Priewe and the Cheesemakers' No. 1 doubles team won in straight sets.
Monroe senior Chelsea Miller at No. 1 singles lost in three sets. After dropping the first set, she won the second set and lost the match in a tiebreaker in the third set.
At No. 2 doubles, Amber Jenson and Maggie Setterstrom and the No. 3 doubles team of junior Morgan Quinn and Miajh Lumatainen both lost in straight sets. Monroe freshman Ashley Placek at No. 4 singles also lost in straight sets.
"I'm really proud of how the team played," Walsh said. "They are coming along."
