STOUGHTON - Each of the Monroe boys tennis team's three doubles teams finished 1-2 at the Stoughton Invitational Saturday despite a shuffled lineup due to some top singles and doubles players missing the tournament.

"I'm proud of the effort by our guys in this invite," Monroe coach Matt Bordner said. "We played without our top singles and top doubles players, so it was a challenge for all of our guys to move up a flight higher than they were used to. (Junior) Gabe Moon did a nice job stepping into the varsity lineup at No. 4 singles as well as (sophomores) Judson Rikkers and Tim Beckman at No. 3 doubles. Our doubles teams all won their second matches and made it to the consolation championships, but I think we ran out of fuel a bit at the end. I think if we would have had our doubles lineup at full strength, we would have some chances at medals."

Sauk Prairie's Parker Chrisler and Kelby Mack at No. 1 doubles defeated Monroe's David Keegan and Nick Quinn, both seniors, 6-0, 6-0. Stoughton's Zerek Zeichert and Branden Metzler knocked off Keegan and Quinn 6-2, 6-4. Keegan and Quinn bounced back to beat Janesville Parker's Giovanni Cruz and Abel Saaka 6-4, 6-1.

At No. 2 doubles, the Cheesemakers' Luke Quinn and Wade Sweeney, both juniors, defeated Jefferson's Vinny Bonofiglo and Brady Pogantsch 7-6 (7), 6-4. Milton's Sean Harvatine and Luke Grote defeated Sweeney and Luke Quinn 6-0, 6-1. Janesville Parker's Cayden Erickson and Parker Schneider beat Sweeney and Luke Quinn 6-0, 6-2.

The lone win for the Cheesemakers' No. 3 doubles team of Rikkers and Beckman came over Stoughton's Brody Jerrick and Evan Jensen 6-0, 6-1. The Red Hawks' Zach Miller and Mason Lebakken cruised past Rikkers and Beckman 6-0, 6-0. Janesville Parker's Jake Turner and Andrew Cunningham topped Rikkers and Beckman 6-3, 6-2.

In singles play, freshman Bo Bahler at No. 1 singles, freshman Chris Andraski at No. 2 singles and junior Evan Thompson at No. 3 singles each went 1-2. Janesville Parker's Max Kisting defeated Bahler 6-1, 6-0. Oregon's Sean Bychowsky rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Bahler. Bahler beat Big Foot's Eli Hibl 6-4, 6-1.

At No. 2 singles, Milton's Evan Mallon edged Andraski in three sets 6-2, 5-7, 10-2. Oregon's Zak Roskos also edged Andraski 6-0, 6-0. Andraski defeated Janesville Parker's Omar Puebla 6-0, 6-2.

"Chris and Bo continued to battle hard but caught some tough matchups early," Bordner said. "Chris lost his second match, but I was so proud of how hard he fought. He was down 1-5 in his second set but played with grit and fought back to win that set 7-5. That doesn't happen often and it was a cool moment for him to have. I know he would have liked to finish out that tiebreaker, but it's a great learning opportunity to show the importance of each point."

Thompson beat Janesville Parker's Ross Cavey 6-7 (6), 6-4, 10-8. Sauk Prairie's Alex Kinnamon knocked him off 6-0, 6-1, and Milton's Tate Dunk rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Thompson.

"Evan Thompson really improved today, and it was nice to get him a chance at singles and utilize his athleticism," Bordner said. "His serve improved today, and he's heading in the right direction."
