MONONA - The Monroe boys tennis team won three of the four singles matches to clip Monona Grove in a dual 4-3 Friday.
Monroe junior David Shon at No. 1 singles defeated Monona Grove's Cristian Docter in three sets 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3. At No. 2 singles, Monroe junior Matt Monahan defeated Jack Hegge 6-1, 6-4. Junior Jeremy Miller at No. 3 singles defeated Monona Grove's Jacob Schuchard 6-1, 6-1. With the win, Monroe improves to 2-3 in the Badger South Conference.
"What a great win for Monroe tennis," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "This was a nail-biter that wasn't decided until the end."
Monahan trailed 4-1 in the second set, but battled back to win.
"Matt has struggled at times this season to pull himself out of slumps, but today he stayed calm and had a nice comeback," Saugstad said.
After Monroe freshman Silas Setterstrom dropped a three-set match to Monona Grove's Luke Nelson 6-0, 0-6, 6-1, the Cheesemakers trailed in the match 3-2 and needed wins at both No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles.
The Cheesemakers' No. 1 doubles team of senior Mark Jenson and junior Kevin Noriega defeated Monona Grove's Nick Rice and Alex McDade in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Jenson ended the match by holding serve.
Shon clinched the win for the Cheesemakers. He broke Docter's serve in the second set to get a wild tiebreaker. Shon trailed in the tiebreaker 4-0 after two double faults. He won seven of the next eight points and pulled out the tiebreaker 7-5.
"David did a great job of keeping his opponent off-balance with his deep topspin shots," Saugstad said. "Another key for David was his patience and mental toughness."
The Cheesemakers will host the Monroe Doubles Invitational at 9 a.m. today.
"Hopefully, we can keep the momentum from our last few wins going," Saugstad said.
