Monroe clips Argyle in rainy slugfest

ARGYLE - The Monroe Brewers, despite the rain, knocked off Argyle in a slugfest 12-9 for their second straight win in a Home Talent League Western Sectional clash Sunday, May 26.

Monroe (2-3) scored four runs in the fifth inning and was able to hang on for the victory. Monroe's Ben Conway pitched 5 1/3 innings to get the win and Monroe player-manager Jeff Newcomer pitched 3 2/3 innings to get the save for the Brewers. Conway gave up six runs, but only two earned runs on six hits. He struck out three and walked six.

"It was a nerve-wracking game," Newcomer said. "It rained most of the game. We didn't know if the umpires were going to call it. We got the lead early and Argyle came back. It went back and forth."

Scott White went 4-for-5 with three runs scored to lead the Brewers. Seth Doescher went 3-for-5 with two runs scored for the Brewers. Teammate Dan Purcell went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and Newcomer was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Mitch Marty went 2-for-5 with one RBI.

On Saturday, May 26, Monroe defeated a previously unbeaten Dodgeville team 12-2 in seven innings for their first win of the Sunday league.

Marty went 4-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the Brewers. Drew Geissbuhler went 3-for-4, Taylor Riese was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Matt Busjahn was 2-for-5. Newcomer hit a three-run home run to power the Brewers.

"We swung the bats really good," Newcomer said. "We finally put together a game."



Wiota 16, Ridgeway 6

Verona 8, Wiota 3

RIDGEWAY - Nick Flannery had three hits to lead Wiota to a 16-6 eight-inning win over Ridgeway Monday, May 27.

Wiota (2-2) scored three runs in the first, fith and seventh innings to take an 11-3 lead. The Indians put Ridgeway away with a five-run eighth. Flannery went 3-for-5. Wiota's Brad Schleim went 2-for-3 and Jeff Solberg was 2-for-5.

Solberg pitched a complete game to get the win. He gave up six runs on eight hits. He struck out four and walked five.

On Sunday, three-time defending champion Verona defeated Wiota 8-3. The Indians battled back from a 4-1 deficit, but couldn't pull out the win.

Wiota's Tommy Meier went 3-for-3 and Solberg and Merill Brunson were each 2-for-4. Wiota's Taylor Wiegel pitched four innings and gave up four runs on six hits. He struck out one and walked four. Wiota will play at Monroe Sunday, June 2.
