Monroe clipped by Verona; Wiota wins

MONROE - Verona came into town on Monday and bowled over the Monroe Brewers in a Home Talent Sunday League game, 10-2.

Monroe trailed 5-2 after eight innings, but Verona scored five earned runs against reliever Kris Rieder in the top of the ninth. Rieder allowed four walks and four hits in the inning, one after Rooney Janecke allowed an unearned run in relief.

Cody Boals started for Monroe and allowed four unearned runs on five hits and four walks in seven innings. He also struck out five.

The Brewers (1-3) committed seven errors in the game and had just six hits at the dish. Shaun Dascher was 2 for 5 to lead Monroe's offense.

Trailing 5-0 in the top of the eighth, Boals walked to open the inning and advanced on a single by Dascher. Janecke then laced an RBI double and Lon Scheuerell brought in Dascher with an RBI groundout.

Ben Wallace got the win on the hill for Verona, tossing eight innings.

Monroe hosts Pine Bluff Thursday night at 6 p.m. for a Night League game. The Brewers return to Sunday League action on Saturday, June 5, at Hollandale, and host Ridgeway on Sunday.

HOLLANDALE - Brock Bidlingmaier struck out eight Rockies in seven innings to get the win on the hill for Wiota.

The Indians trailed 1-0 after the first inning but took a 2-1 lead in the third. A three-run sixth knocked Hollandale starter Patrick Clerkin from the game, and a four-run eighth gave Wiota all the insurance runs it would need.

Kory Tuescher and Nick Flannery each had two hits and a double for Wiota (4-1). Teammate Jeff Solberg added a double at the dish.

Wiota hosts Argyle on Saturday.
