SAUK PRAIRIE - The Cheesemakers have fought some tough battles as of late and, Monday at Sauk Prairie, they came up on the short end of the racquet.
Three of Monroe's four singles players dropped their matches and senior Matt Turek and Levi Jannsens dropped a three-set matchup with Brian Nelson and Nolan Lendved in the non-conference meet.
Dan Becker pulled out the lone singles victory with a gritty 7-6, 7-6, twin tie-breaker effort.
Jim Kundert and Mark Hoesly knocked off Tyler Mazerek and Austin Nolden, 6-0, 5-7, 6-2, in No. 2 doubles play and Nick Hendrickson and Trevor Arn got past Chris Norton and Dylan Breunig, 6-2, 7-5.
Carson Root's 2-6, 7-6, 7-5 loss to Erik Brattset in No. 1 play was the toughest for Monroe coach Jim Bartholf to swallow.
"Carson had two match points in the second set but couldn't close out the set and went on to lose in three sets," Bartholf said.
Matt Le also lost in three sets after winning the first. Monroe gets little rest as the Badger South schedule resumes tonight in Monona Grove.
