MONROE - It only took one big inning for the Monroe Senior Legion baseball team to solve the riddle that was Evansville pitcher Ryan Cashore.

Cashore carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and that is when Monroe broke through for four runs and cruised to a 6-3 comeback win over Evansville Monday, June 17.

"We are trying to get them to change the culture of Monroe baseball," Monroe Senior Legion coach Eric Losenegger said. "We need to get them to buy into changing the culture."

Monroe (2-0) caught a break when Logan Weckerly reached on a dropped third strike in the fifth. Cashore then walked Desmond Ford. Ford stole second and a run scored on an errant throw that sailed into center field. Monroe's Jaron Kuester then lined a curveball for a game-tying RBI double.

Kuester scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch to give Monroe a 4-3 lead. Two batters later, Sean Saxby crushed an RBI triple to right to give Monroe all the insurance they would need.

"It just came together," said Kuester, who went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. "We started getting used to what (Cashore) was like. Once we got to him, we just packed it on."

Weckerly pitched a complete game four-hitter to get the win. He gave up just one earned run. Two other runs scored on a passed ball and an error. After giving up a solo home run to Evansville's Josh Mitchel, Weckerly beared down and retired seven of the last nine batters he faced.

"I just thought 'keep throwing strikes and give the team a chance to win,'" Weckerly said of Mitchel's home run which gave Evansville a 3-1 lead.

Weckerly said the key was getting his curveball over for strikes and in the right spots.

"(Weckerly) got stronger as the game went on," Losenegger said. "He battled for us. Logan kept us right there, and we found a way to get a win."

Ford went 1-for-2 and had two stolen bases. Ford also made several standout defensive plays at second base. Monroe right fielder Ryan Erickson caught a fly ball and threw to first for an inning-ending double play in the second to help Weckerly get out of a jam.

Kuester looks forward to the rest of the summer season. Monroe plays at Fort Atkinson Wednesday and then hosts a doubleheader against Jefferson Saturday.

"This summer we are taking more bases and being more aggressive," Kuester said. "This summer I'm just hoping to improve and get better at thinking baseball and get to where I need to be."
