STOUGHTON - Tuesday's Badger South Conference meet at Stoughton was an event that the Monroe track and field team has been preparing for since the start of the season. After shattering some records and setting some personal bests in some of last week's events, the Cheesemakers turned their focus to their conference competition, where even more records were set, as the seven teams competed against one another in their regular season finale.
In the boys competition, the Cheesemakers took home the overall championship, finishing with 163 points, ahead of Monona Grove (144.5) and Oregon (110). With the final standings, the Monroe boys collected a second straight Badger South title, and their fifth out of the past six years.
Monroe senior Jake Hirsbrunner won the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.67 seconds to go along with a first-place finish in the high jump (6 feet, 4 inches) and a second-place finish in the 800 meters, behind teammate Ethan Moehn. After setting a school and meet record at the Monona Grove Invitational last week in the 800, Moehn again took the top spot in the event with a time of 1 minute, 58.93 seconds. In the 1,600, Moehn set a conference record with a time of 4:11.62. Senior Noah Tostrud finished second with 4:26.77. Moehn won his third individual title with a time of 10:00.68 in the 3,200, while Trevor Blum finished third with 10:03.21.
"He (Moehn) is a machine right now," boys coach Curt Miller said. "He's posted some of the most impressive times I've ever seen. He's an amazing athlete, and it's just a pleasure to see him work hard and accomplish all that he has done. He definitely deserves it."
Senior Grant Keith picked up an individual title in the pole vault, finishing with a height of 13 feet, while the 1,600 and 3,200 relay teams took the top spot in their events with times of 3:29.08 and 8:30.64, respectively.
Other notable finishes for the boys include Forrest Klug-Hanson (second place) in the 100, the 800 relay team (second place), and Charlie Kind (third place) in the discus.
Host Stoughton won the overall girls standings with a team score of 193.5. Monroe finished fourth with a team score of 87.5, behind Monona Grove (142) and Edgewood (91), along with three newly crowned conference champions.
"Overall we performed really, really well," girls coach Doug Miller said. "We did better than what I had us slated at, (and) top to bottom, every one of our girls helped our team tonight. Our seniors had a great meet, but overall our team looked really good, and we're heading in the right direction."
Freshman Jordan Hirsbrunner finished first in the high jump with a height of 5-2. Senior Tre Voegeli completed the sweep in the pole vault, as she cleared a height of 10-6, which was a foot better than second place. Claiming the third event title for the Cheesemakers was the 400 relay team of Lauren Werth, Mafer Larraga, Abby Oudinot and Josie Eberle, winning with a time of 51.71.
Facing tough competition, freshman Ciara Kaderly took second place in the 3,200 with a time of 12:29.59. The 800 relay team of Werth, Larraga, Hirsbrunner and Isabel Bazley took third behind Monona Grove and Stoughton with a time of 1:50.86.
