REEDSBURG - Monroe junior Ben Latimer scored a game-high 13 points and the Cheesemakers made free throws down the stretch to roll to a 54-30 win over Reedsburg in a Badger Challenge game Saturday.
Monroe (7-8) went on a 16-2 run in the second quarter to build an 11-point lead at the half. The Cheesemakers outscored the Beavers 33-20 in the second half.
The Cheesemakers had a balanced scoring attack. In addition to Latimer, three other players reached double figures. Monroe senior Desmond Ford scored 11 points and played solid defense, limiting Reedsburg leading scorer Ty Horkan to just two points. Monroe senior Logan Weckerly and sophomore Alex Tordoff each added 10 points.
"It's a good game for seeding reasons," Monroe coach Pat Murphy said. "They (Reedsburg) are in our half sectional."
The Cheesemakers made 12 of 13 free throws in the fourth quarter and finished 73.6 percent (14 of 19). Ford was 8 of 8 shooting free throws in the fourth quarter and Tordoff was 4 of 4.
"That is how you close out games," Murphy said of the free-throw shooting. "We have been talking about that we have to shoot 70 percent from the free throw line.
Monroe will host Stoughton, the Badger South Conference leader, on Thursday.
"We talk all the time about stacking successes," Murphy said. "This is a good time of year to be playing your best basketball."
