FORT ATKINSON - With two events remaining, the Monroe boys track team needed to beat Mount Horeb in both events and did so to secure a team championship at the Fort Atkinson Invite Friday, April 26.

The Cheesemakers outdistanced Mount Horeb in the 3,200-meter run and the 1,600 relay to hoist the trophy over 10 other teams, including conference rivals Fort Atkinson and Monona Grove.

Monroe had four first-place finishers. Ethan Moehn won the 1,600, with a time of 4:31.14. Grant Keith won the pole vault, setting a personal best of 12 feet, 6 inches, and Jake Hirsbrunner won both the high jump (6'2") and the 800 (2:02.24).

In the 4x400, one of the last two events, Payton Hoesly ailing with shin pain after two events, Noah Tostrud, having already ran in two events himself, stepped into Hoesly's spot.

"He pulled through for us and probably ran as good as anybody," Monroe boys coach Curt Miller said. "Without him stepping in, we don't bring home a team trophy today. It was neat to get down to the end of the meet and count on some kids to win it for us."

Team-playing was also featured in the high jump, where Hirsbrunner secured a first-place finish in the event with just two jumps, not even taking a run at a personal best.

"One of the neat things about our team is the kids ... see the big picture, and the team saw the big picture today. We have a lot of unselfish kids in the program, which is pretty special to work with."

On the girls side, the Cheesemakers finished ninth with 36 team points.

Tre Voegeli finished second in the pole vault, matching a personal best of 10-6 that she set just two days prior.

Miller was impressed by how quickly she was able to return to that height.

"Making a personal best, which Tre did by a foot Wednesday, the thing is to come out and match that," Miller said.
