Monroe boys take third, girls fifth

PLATTEVILLE - The Monroe boys track team opened the season with a third place finish at the Tri-State Large School Invitational Saturday at Platteville.

Verona won the invite 101-85 over Sun Prairie and Monroe (58). The Monroe girls track team finished fifth.

Monroe senior Nick Walker won the shot with a throw of 51-feet, 7 inches and senior Jeffrey Hill won the pole vault (14-0).

Fellow senior Dylan Starck finished second in the 800-meter run and senior Caleb Ahrens was second in the in the 55 hurdles (:8.40). The Cheesemakers had two of the top high jumpers, with senior Michael Barrett taking second (6-2) and Jake Hirsbrunner finishing sixth (5-10).

Junior Joel Henry took fourth in the 1,600 with a time of 4 minutes, 50.74 seconds, which was less than six seconds away from the top spot. Sophomore Steve Christiansen finished fifth in the 3,200 with a time of 10:34.92.

Cameron Wahl added an eighth place finish in the pole vault (12-0), Skyler Stingley took eighth in the 400 (:54.64). The Cheesemakers' 3,200 relay team finished 10th (9:31.29) and Evan Brady was 10th in the triple jump (37-8 3/4).

The Monroe girls track team was led by seniors Jaclyn Ditter and Jess Leu. Ditter won the 55 hurdles (:8.97) and Leu won the shot put (37-0). The Cheesemakers' 800 relay team also finished second with a time of 1:53.63, which was more than six seconds behind Evanston Township.

Evanston Township won the girls title 101-71 over Verona. Sun Prairie (66), Davenport West (57) and Monroe (37.5) rounded out the top five at the 18 team invite.

Monroe's Molly Wyss finished fifth in the high jump (4-8) and freshman Lauren Werth took fifth in the 200 (:28.61). Junior Molly Hlubek was eighth in the 400 (1:07.36), Cheyenne Foster finished ninth in the triple jump (29-2 1/2) and theCheesemakers' 1,600 relay team was ninth with a time of 4:34.93.

Area long distance track runners kicked off the season with a bang Saturday at the Tri-State Small School Invitational.

Sugar River sophomore Ryan McCoy finished second in the 1,600-meter run, with a time of 4 minutes, 39.59 seconds, which was a little more than a second away from winning the race. There were four area runners in the top 10 in the 1,600 and three area runners in the top five in the 3,200.

The other top runners in the 1,600 included Darlington junior Kent Miehe, fourth (4:54.40), Darlington's Destin Komprood, sixth (4:57.32) and Albany sophomore Drew Mather (5:04.26). In the 3,200, Darlington freshman Tyson Miehe took second (10:15.17). Darlington's Connor Roche took fourth (10:52.53) and Sugar River senior Dennis Haak was fifth (11:02.05). The Sugar River boys 3,200 relay team finished first with a time of 8:57.9.

Durant outdistanced Cascade, 58-46.5 for the boys team title. Darlington (40) finished fourth, Sugar River took seventh (33) and Albany was last (5) at the 21-team invite.

Area athletes also turned in some top results in the pole vault. Darlington's Levi Wedig was second at 10-feet, 6 inches. Albany senior Josh Krueger took fourth (10-0) and Sugar River's Cole Dockter took fifth (9-6).

Darlington's Cedric Flesher took third in the long jump (18-6 1/2) and ninth in the 400 (:58.23). Sugar River senior Kirbe French finished seventh in the high jump (5-8).

In the 1,600 relay, Sugar River finished fourth (3:50.76) and Darlington took seventh (3:55.32). The Redbirds added a ninth place finish in the 800 relay with a time of 1:44.66.

In the girls track invite, Sugar River's Lexie Hanson won the 55 (:7.83), which was 0.01 of a second faster than the runner-up.

Albany's Bailey Hlavachek finished third in the 3,200 (13:02.73). Two other area runners cracked the top six in the 3,200 including Sugar River's LouAnn Judd, fifth (13:50.20) and Darlington's Hannah Robiolio, sixth (13:52.63).

Cascade outdistanced Northwest 101-64 for the girls title. Darlington finished fifth (38), Sugar River took ninth (32) and Albany was 17th (8) out of 20 teams.

Chelsea Fortin of Darlington took second in the pole vault (8-0) and teammate Sydney Schulte tied for fifth (7-6). Darlington junior Hannah Huffman finished second in the long jump (14-11 1/2) and seventh in the 200 (:29.43). Sugar River's Ashley Brusveen took third in the high jump (4-10).

Darlington's McKenzie Pickett took fourth in the shotput (30-9 1/2) and Sugar River's Jessica Putland was fifth (30-6 1/2).

Darlington sophomore Cheyenne Wolfe finished fifth in the 1,600 (6:00.61) and teammate Tatum Evenstad was ninth in the 400 (1:08.52). In the triple jump, Sugar River had two in the top 10. Samantha Stecha finished seventh (27-8) and Victoria Ortgiesen was 10th (27-2 3/4).

Three area teams finished in the top eight in the 3,200 relay. Darlington finished sixth (11:23.55), Albany was seventh (11:24.02) and Sugar River was eighth (11:30). The Sugar River 800 relay took sixth (2:02.15) and Darlington finished sixth in the 1,600 relay (4:42.05).
