JANESVILLE - With temperatures in the 90s, the Monroe boys cross country team ran to a 19th-place finish out of 40 teams at the Midwest Invitational Saturday.

"This meet is by far the best competition we will see all season," Monroe co-coach Jim Ingold said.

Homestead junior Drew Bosley won the individual 5,000-meter champion with a time of 15 minutes, 11.6 seconds. Monroe senior Drake Ingold finished 22nd out of 270 runners at 16:49.

"He has been a consistent performer for us all season," Jim Ingold said of his son Drake. "Placing top 30 in a meet of this caliber is a credit to his hard work and dedication to the sport."

Darlington took 15th as a team with 404 points - well ahead of the Cheesemakers (487). Madison La Follette captured the team title 108-171 over Arrowhead. Sun Prairie finished third (172). Darlington junior Payton Heinberg finished 25th (16:52.6) to lead the Redbirds.

Monroe, ranked sixth in the Wisconsin Cross Country Coaches Association Division 2 state poll, ran its No. 4 and 5 runners in the freshmen-sophomore race to compete for a top team finish in the race.

"If we had them run in the varsity race, we would have placed in the top 15," Jim Ingold said.

Monroe senior Dylan Scace took 43rd (17:14.7) and junior Kyle Legler was 84th (17:55.6). Senior Brock Bertalot placed 155th (18:52.2) and Brennan Shelton took 183rd (19:22.4).

The final two races were cancelled due to the heat.

"Running conditions reaching over 90 degrees made running conditions extremely difficult for all competitors," Jim Ingold said. "We were happy to have everyone finish their races and come home with no heat related problems."

Darlington senior Tanner Evenstad took 65th (17:37.7) and senior Paul Kind placed 86th (17:56.3). Junior teammate Tucker Lange took 99th (18:08.5) and sophomore Bailey Schwartz finished 129th (18:34.4).

In the girls' competition, Monroe took 29th out of 36 teams. Monroe freshman Anika Einbeck finished 85th out of 241 runners (21:53). Janesville Craig ran away with the team title 62-162 over the Wisconsin Dells. Darlington took 21st (512 points), which was well ahead of the Cheesemakers (806). Janesville Craig's Peyton Sippy was the individual champion (18:21.1).

"Anika had a great last mile of the race," Ingold said. "With more racing experience and confidence, she will be able to run harder in the middle section of the race.

Darlington had three runners in the top 100. Junior Ilse Mendez finished 21st (20:31) to lead the Redbirds. Senior teammate Reghan Komprood took 77th (21:42) and senior Erin Wolf placed 80th (21:44.9). Senior Emma Crist took 136th (22:57.2) and sophomore Maddie Crist was 181st (23:58.8).

Monroe freshman Jaci Hayes finished 141st (23:07.9) and senior Rachel Meier took 173rd (23:48.8). Junior Elise Smith placed 203rd (25:05.7) and senior Natalie Faith took 204th (25:12.2).

"The girls have been looking good in practices and should be running faster times in the next few weeks," Ingold said. "Like the boys team, I was happy to have all the runners cross the finish line with no heat related problems."
