WHITEWATER - Monroe juniors Kade King and Max Lange combined to score 34 points to lead the Cheesemakers to a thrilling 59-52 overtime win over Whitewater Tuesday in a nonconference game.

King scored a game-high 19 points and Lange added 15. With the win, Monroe (11-6, 6-3 Badger South) has now won six straight games.

It wasn't easy for the Cheesemakers. Monroe led by eight points with about 4 minutes left. However, the Cheesemakers had turnovers on six straight possessions. Whitewater's Roberto Navejas drilled a 3-pointer on a buzzer-beater at the end of regulation to tie the game at 51 and send it to overtime.

"David Keegan defended him as well as he could have," Monroe coach Brian Bassett said of Keegan's defense on Navejas. He had two hands up in his face. You can't defend him any better. They went the length of the court in 6 seconds and we told them not to foul."

Monroe outscored Whitewater 8-1 in the extra session. The Whippets played a 2-3 zone most of the game that featured 6-11 freshman Jake Martin.

"He is a monster," Bassett said of Martin. "We haven't played against anyone that big in a long time. Our guys struggled with his size. We missed some shots we don't usually miss."

Monroe senior Brayden Zettle battled foul trouble and finished with 6 points. Senior teammate Jonah Tostrud added 6.

Navejas scored a team-high 19 points to lead the Whippets. King made 9 of 10 free throws. As a team, the Cheesemakers finished 15 of 22 from the charity stripe.
