MONROE - During a two-hour lightning delay at the WIAA Division 2 regional, Monroe junior Dylan Scace and many other track and field athletes had to find ways to pass the time inside the Monroe High School gym.

Scace and some teammates spent time in the wrestling room talking, eating snacks and watching others do flips to bide their time.

"It was just about making sure we are ready to run," Scace said. "We just had to warm up good, stretch and make sure we were ready. It's not any different than our normal days of practice."

The Monroe boys 3,200 relay team of senior Josh Smith, junior Drake Ingold, junior Jonah Tostrud and Scace won the race in 8 minutes, 22.52 seconds.

"It feels relieving," Scace said. "We didn't have to run all-out today. We were just going out to make the fast heat in the sectional."

The top time for the Monroe boys 3,200 relay this year is 8:06. The Cheesemakers ran a 7:56 to finish as the state runner-up last year.

"We can go under 8 minutes," Scace said. "By the end of this year we will be going faster than last year."

The Monroe boys racked up 119 points to win the regional championship. McFarland was second in the nine-team meet with 99.5 points. Brodhead-Juda was fourth (81.83) and Sugar River fifth (75).

Monroe senior Brayden Zettle won the triple jump with a personal-best effort of 43 feet, 11 inches. Zettle also won the long jump (21-1).

"Our team has really been coming on at the end of the year," Monroe boys coach Scott Mosher said. "Everyone we thought could make it through did."

The top four finishers in each event advance to the McFarland sectional on Thursday.

Scace also won a regional title in the 800-meter run (1:59.43), and Tostrud was fourth (2:01.22). Ingold just missed qualifying for the sectional in the 800 taking fifth (2:01.50).

"The third through fifth runners were less than one second apart," Mosher said.

Monroe sophomore Kyle Legler won the 3,200 (10:01.49).

Sugar River junior Dalton Fahey won the 400 (51.28), and Monroe junior Jason Koller was second (51.94).

Fahey teamed with sophomore Milo Hosely, senior Christian Arnett and junior Cole Myers to win the 1,600 relay (3:31.48). The Cheesemakers' 1,600 relay team of Zettle, Tostrud, Scace and Koller took second (3:31.55) and Brodhead-Juda placed third (3:32.55).

Monroe sophomore Jordan Montgomery finished second in the 100 (11.34), .06 seconds behind regional champion Brock Zartman (11.28) of Edgerton. Montgomery also took second in the 200 (23.32).

Monroe senior Andy Johnson finished second in the pole vault by clearing 11-0. Brodhead-Juda sophomore Theo Policastro took third (11-0).

"The field events really stepped up for us," Mosher said.

Brodhead-Juda junior Brekan Day cleared 6-4 to win a regional title in the high jump. Junior teammate Jeff Moss finished second (5-10). Senior teammate Joe Stout took second in the discus (141-4).

Monroe senior Trevor Aebly took second in the 110 hurdles (15.36). He was four-hundredths of a second behind regional champion Brady Downing (15.32) of Edgerton. Monroe junior Tyson Welsch had a PR by more than 11 feet to finish fourth in the discus (128-2).

Brodhead-Juda's 400 relay finished second (45.40) and the Cardinals' 800 relay team placed third (1:33.48). Brodhead-Juda senior Reuben Larson took second in the 300 hurdles (40.27)

Myers finished third in the 110 hurdles (15.75) and fourth in the 300 hurdles (42.07). Senior teammate Cade Martin placed third in the 200 (23.51). The Sugar River 3,200 relay team took fourth (8:40.15). Sugar River senior Cash Hoffman placed third in the shot put (45-8).
