BELOIT - The Monroe boys basketball team had a trio of guards get hot hitting seven 3-pointers, but it wasn't enough as Beloit Memorial clipped the Cheesemakers 65-61 in the season opener Saturday.
Monroe junior Alex Tordoff scored a game-high 20 points and made three 3-pointers. Junior teammate Carter Sawdey scored 17 points and hit two 3-pointers. Senior Brent Edmunds added 12 points and knocked down two 3-pointers.
The Cheesemakers shot 43 percent for the game.
"As long as we are unselfish and find the open teammate that is always a good formula," Monroe coach Pat Murphy said.
The Cheesemakers had 14 turnovers.
"The offense could have been better," Murphy said. "That led to some transition layups."
Dre'mond Long and Anthony Johnson each scored 18 points to lead Beloit Memorial.
"They scored on 16 layups," Murphy said. "I watched the film and we gave up 32 points on layups. I don't ever remember a game when we gave up 32 points on layups."
The Purple Knights made about as many free throws (12 of 19) as the Cheesemakers attempted (13).
Monroe will play a non-conference game at 7:15 p.m. today at Brodhead.
"Everyone has to look to get better," Murphy said. "It's a little bit like the tournament where we don't have a lot of time. It's like a regional final where you play Friday and then Saturday."
