Monroe bowling team takes fifth at state

MADISON - The Monroe High School bowling team finished fifth place in Division 2 at the State Club Bowling Championships Sunday at Bowl-A-Vard Lanes.

It's the first time the Monroe bowling team has reached the finals and it's the best finish in the history of the program, which made its third straight state appearance. Monroe sophomore Devon Boeck finished 16th place in the singles state bowling tournament.

The state club bowling tournament started Friday. The Cheesemakers, according to the Wisconsin High Schools Club Bowling website, finished fifth-place at state with a total of 2,981, which was 72 pins behind fourth-place Campbellsport. The Marshall-Waterloo-Poynette co-op won the Division 2 state championship with a three-day score of 3,159.

The Cheesemakers bowled a 900 as a team Friday to advance to the state semifinals. In the semifinals Saturday, the Cheesemakers bowled a 1,099. Monroe wrapped up the team state competition with a 982 Sunday.

Boeck bowled a 1,245 for a three-day total to finish 16th place in the singles state tournament. He bowled a 639 series Friday to qualify for the state semifinals. Boeck had a best game of 266 Friday and finished with a 606 series in the televised finals Sunday. The best game for Boeck Sunday was a 217.

Two other bowlers for the Cheesemakers who qualified for the singles state tournament, senior Trevor Hasse and sophomore Trace Ermey, bowled Friday, but didn't qualify for the finals. Hasse bowled a 601 series and was 38 pins away from qualifying for the finals. The best game for Hasse was a 243. Ermey had a 583 series and his best game was a 226.
