WESTON - The Monroe bowling team finished fifth place in the Division 2 Wisconsin Club Bowling State Tournament Saturday at Dale's Weston Lanes.

The Cheesemakers earned the fourth seed after the qualifying round Saturday morning. The team came within 25 pins of making a return trip to the live televised finals for the second straight year. Monroe was looking to win its second straight state championship and was competing at state for the sixth straight year.

"Obviously, the kids were disappointed," Monroe coach Brittany Svendsen said. "There are a lot of teams who would like to trade positions with us and take fifth in the state."

The Cheesemakers knocked off Peshtigo 182-166 in the first match of the semifinals. Despite a 16-pin lead going into the final game, fifth-seeded Peshtigo edged Monroe 324-300 after winning the second game by 50 pins, 158-118. The Cheesemakers earned a shot at the semifinals after bowling a 965 combined in five games during the qualifying round Saturday.

Svendsen said the bowling conditions were challenging on the lanes.

"We had a really bad second game, and they (Peshtigo) had more total pins," she said. "We did everything we could. We came up a little short in the semifinal."

Monroe senior Samantha Lynch finished 15th in the Division 2 singles state tournament. She was the only bowler out of a trio from Monroe to make it out of Friday's qualifying round. Lynch bowled a 543 in the qualifying round to earn a berth in the semifinals.

In the semifinals, Lynch bowled a 176 in her first game. She followed that up with a 117 and a 165 to finish 15th with a total of 458.

"She (Lynch) was really excited when her name was called for the semifinals," Svendsen said. "To finish 15th out of 54 girls in the state is very good, and we will take it."
