MONROE - Senior Niven Tomasiewicz posted a hat trick, scoring three goals to lead the Monroe boys soccer team to a 7-1 win over Jefferson to win the Monroe Quad tournament Saturday at Honey Creek Park.

"It's our tournament. We wanted to keep the trophy here and keep the momentum going," Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said.

It was a dominating championship game for the Cheesemakers, who were coming off a 6-0 win over Richland Center in the first game. Monroe (3-1), which outshot Richland Center 53-7, scored four goals in the final 10 minutes to roll past the Hornets. The Cheesemakers didn't need any warmup in the second game. Monroe erupted for five goals in the first half to set the tone against Jefferson in the title game.

"We started slow in the first game against Richland Center," Vasquez said. "I reminded them that we really needed to push the tempo for 80 minutes. We really finished the second half of the first game and the championship game. They really focused on keeping the ball on goal."

Monroe senior Tony Zerilli put the Cheesemakers up 1-0 scoring a goal on an assist from freshman Anthany Hernandez at 11 minutes, 37 seconds. Tomasiewicz scored his first goal on an assist from senior McKenzy Foley at 17:27 to give the Cheesemakers a 2-0 lead. About two minutes, later, Zerilli scored his second goal on a pass from junior Ryne Miller. Tomasiewicz scored his second goal on an assist from senior Mohammad Assaf and Miller added an unassisted goal to give the Cheesemakers a 5-0 lead at the half.

Foley scored a goal in the second half at 48:13 to give the Cheesemakers a 6-1 lead. Tomasiewicz scored his third goal on an assist from freshman Nick Schumacher to cap the scoring.

Despite dominating play against Richland Center in the first game, the Cheesemakers were clinging to a 1-0 lead in the second half after Foley's goal at 32:28.

"We started out slow and struggled with our passes because our passes weren't as pristine," Miller said. "The passing and ball movement from the midfielders to the forwards is way better than last year in my mind. I think in the end we were happy with the result."

Miller gave the Cheesemakers an insurance goal that came from about 20-yards out. Monroe broke the game open with four goals in the final 10 minutes. Monroe junior Jacob Ritschard scored a goal on a header after a cross by Hernandez.

"The cross over from Anthany was great," Ritschard said. "I was in the right spot at the right time."

Hernandez tacked on a goal with a low, hard-lining shot to the far post on an assist from Miller to give the Cheesemakers a 4-0 lead at 74:29. Junior Silas Setterstrom scored his first goal of the season about 3 minutes later.

After averaging just one goal per game last year, the Cheesemakers have seen a spike in their goals per game average through the first four games (4.75).

"I think we are a lot more comfortable with each other this year," Ritschard said. "We know where each other's kicks and passes will end up."
