FORT ATKINSON - The Monroe girls basketball team clamped down on defense and rolled to a 57-19 win over Fort Atkinson Friday.
Monroe junior Sydney Hilliard scored a game-high 14 points. Junior teammate Emily Benzschawel added 13. Both sophomore Grace Tostrud and freshman Megan Benzschawel chipped in 7.
Monroe (15-2, 9-0 Badger South), ranked No. 4 in the Division 2 WisSports.net Coaches Poll, broke the game open with a 20-0 run in the first half and led by 20 points at halftime, 25-5.
"Offensively, we got out to a slow start," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "The pace of the game early on was kind of slow. Our defense helped spark us. We limited them to just one shot. I thought we were solid on defense. I'm proud of the defensive end in the first half. To only give up 5 points in the first half is obviously good."
There were 11 different plays who scored for the Cheesemakers and every player received playing time.
"Our hope was that we would play well enough so everyone would get extended playing time," Mathiason said.
