MONROE - For the second straight day, the Monroe softball team knocked off Milton.

Monroe senior Brooke Adams had two hits and two RBI to lead the Cheesemakers to a 9-3 win over the Red Hawks on Tuesday at Twining Park. Monroe scored a 15-5, six-inning win Monday in Milton.

Pitcher Courtney Terrill helped keep the Red Hawks within striking distance through the first three innings before the Cheesemakers (10-5, 4-2 Badger South) came through with a three-run fourth.

"Their pitcher is solid," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said. "She throws hard. She presents some problems. She walks a few too many and hit three."

Milton scored one run against Monroe senior pitcher Natalie Dillon in the first inning.

It didn't take the Cheesemakers long to answer. Monroe junior Carly Upmann delivered a two-out single. Monroe senior Hannah Vetterli reached on an error. Senior teammate Kylea Ambrose came through with an RBI single to right field to tie the game at 1. Upmann raced to the plate and Milton's catcher dropped the ball before the tag.

Monroe junior Lexi Hilliard, who walked three times and scored three runs, walked to lead off the second. Monroe junior Megan Baumgartner moved her into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Dillon knocked in a run on a groundout. Adams singled to center and took second on a wild pitch. She raced to third base on another wild pitch and scored when the Red Hawks' threw the ball into right field, giving the Cheesemakers a 3-1 lead .

Buvid likes the patience Hilliard has displayed as a hitter this season.

"She has been one of the keys," Buvid said of Hilliard's ability to get on base. "She is much more disciplined this year. She is laying off marginal pitches better. She is more patient."

The Red Hawks scored two runs off Dillon in the third to tie the game at 3. Catcher Vetterli threw to second base, and a Milton runner got caught in a rundown. Monroe senior second baseman Kaya Teasdale threw to sophomore third baseman Alysha Witt, who tagged out the runner to end the Red Hawks' threat.

"It's always a difficult ploy to throw behind the runner," Buvid said of Vetterli's pickoff throw. "Usually when that happens the runner will take off for third. That got us out of a bigger inning."

Dillon delivered a go-ahead, two-run double in the fourth to give the Cheesemakers a 5-3 lead. She later scored on Vetterli's sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 6-3.

Adams, who went 2-for-3, helped seal the win for the Cheesemakers with a two-run double in the fifth.

Dillon pitched a complete game to get the win. She gave up two earned runs on six hits. She struck out seven and walked four. Dillon retired eight straight batters to close the game and gave up just one hit over the final four innings.

"We couldn't shake them early," Buvid said of the Red Hawks. "She (Dillon) settled down late in the game and seemed to have more velocity than yesterday."
