EVANSVILLE - The Monroe Cheesemakers and the Evansville Blue Devils staged a defensive battle through the first half of a non-conference soccer match Tuesday.

For another 26 minutes, the battle continued. The Cheesemakers finally broke through with two goals in the final 14 minutes to claim a 2-0 win.

Senior Kelli Isaj scored on a direct kick at 66:10, then produced another goal on a direct kick at 78:09 to lift Monroe to a hard-fought victory.

"Our defense did a fantastic job tonight," said Tony Stamm, Monroe head coach.

Defensively, Stamm praised the stellar play of senior goalkeeper Kramer Henning, who had nine saves, and senior Sam Keizer for shutting down Evensville.

"Sam Keizer stopped everything," Stamm said.

Monroe (3-4-1) will face Oregon on the road Friday before taking part in the Sauk Prairie Invitational Saturday.
